Dealing with False Accusations
When my mom was first diagnosed with Dementia, she accused me of taking her baby. For some reason, she thought that I had stolen myself! Instead of arguing with her, I agreed that I did it and offered to call the police. Her response was, "Oh no! I don't want you to get into trouble. We will handle it later."
Delusions and paranoia are a part of this horrible disease. Your loved one is confused, losing their memory, misplacing items, etc., and their brain can't process what is happening. The accusation is their honest reality.
Try these strategies:
π‘ Use positive body language and a calm voice
π‘ Don't argue
π‘ Walk away
π‘ Create a calm environment
π‘ Distract them
π‘ Be creative and keep duplicate items
π‘ Bring someone in to support you
You will find that over time your reason and logic wonβt work. Instead of becoming upset at them, step into their world and offer them a safe space with a loving response. Itβs hard, but with much practice, you can overcome the obstacle.Ty Lewis, CEO
